Latin America and the Caribbean have the potential to become a global leader in low-carbon biofuels by leveraging their agribusiness sector, natural resources, and technical expertise.
This Technical Note No. 5 provides an introduction to the low-carbon biofuels sector in Latin America and the Caribbean, explaining its role in the decarbonization of transportation, the main types produced (bioethanol and biodiesel), the importance of countries such as Brazil, and recent production and consumption figures. It also describes the environmental and socioeconomic benefits of biofuels, the challenges that still limit their expansion, and the need to significantly increase production by 2050 to advance the energy transition and carbon neutrality in the region.
