On March 27, 2026, the Workshop on Developing a Roadmap for Methane Emissions Mitigation in Colombia was held in Bogotá at the headquarters of the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH). The event was sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Methane Emissions Observatory (OEMLAC) and organized in collaboration with the Colombian Ministry of Energy. The meeting brought together representatives from public entities, companies, trade associations, and international organizations involved in this initiative.
The event marked a continuation of the technical support process that OEMLAC has been providing to Colombia since 2025. As the first milestone of the initiative, a national assessment of the methane emissions situation in Colombia was conducted, which identified technical, institutional, and financial gaps, as well as opportunities for improvement in inventories, measurement, reporting, and verification systems, and in the definition of mitigation actions in the energy sector—primarily in hydrocarbons and coal mining. Building on this foundation, progress was subsequently made in developing a national roadmap.
Within this framework, the workshop was designed as a forum for participatory validation of the main findings of the assessment and for technical strengthening of the roadmap currently being developed. The workshop provided an opportunity to review progress, gather expert input, and prioritize recommendations for its consolidation.
The results of this workshop will help refine Colombia’s roadmap and define the next steps. As such, OEMLAC continues to provide technical support to countries in the region in their efforts to strengthen the management and mitigation of methane emissions.
